Shocks and vibration are a common issue in every working environment, furthermore where large machineries are moved and installed, like in ships and shipyards. On the shipyard side, problems may arise while handling sensitive devices (starting from delivery from the manufacturer up to the unloading and installation), while onboard there are several sources of vibration, firstly engines, generators and drivetrains .Vibrations may also be conveyed by the exhaust gas systems and transferred to the upper decks, causing noises and discomfort in the cabins and toubles in the technical rooms.
Onboard there are also other vibration sources, such as air treatment/conditioning systems or forced air devices (e.g. the car/truck decks and cargo bay).Elastic mounts must be carefully selected, in order to control both disturbing vibrations and support masses during ship movements (pitch, roll and yaw), using specifically engineered devices, different from others commonly used in static environments.Lastly also the fireproofness of the elastic devices must be kept in good consideration, using metallic resilients or self-exstinguishing and low smoke emissions rubbers.
